Bone Health 101...

Calcium is the most important mineral for the maintenance of the bone structure, for balancing acid-base, muscle tone even the nervous system. Several factors hinder the absorption of calcium through the intestines, such as hyperacidity, excessive stress, coffee, sugar, alcohol and carbonated drinks. Sooner or later, a lack of sun, vitamin D, magnesium due to the refining of food, a lack of oxygen and exercise, will also cause a more or less severe deficiency in calcium.

There are a great many people who are easily at risk of being calcium deficient. Firstly, pregnant women and their fetus, particularly during the last trimester, at which time the bones are formed and growing children, who multiply their bone mass tenfold up to the point of their adolescence. It is a known fact that in North America only 19% of girls and 52% of boys have sufficient calcium in their systems. Later, menopausal women and the elderly have more brittle bones due to a reduction of estrogens, but also because of accumulated toxins and hormones, which interfere with the natural rebuilding of bone.

It is crucial to select calcium, which is combined with specially selected, highly bio-available co-factors, such as adjunct herbs rich in minerals, like chamomile, spinach and fennel, not to forget magnesium, zinc and vitamin D. It is important to chose the right combination of calcium. For example, calcium gluconate is ten times more absorbable than calcium carbonate, which is most often used as a supplement.
