Avril Laval: sustainable fish & seafood products
Avril Laval’s fish counter offers a wide range of sea products selected according to high quality standards.
Products offered at Avril Laval’s fish counter come from sustainable fishing practices and are recommended by Ocean Wise. This conservation program was created to educate consumers and businesses on issues related to fishing and aquaculture practices and to help them making eco-friendly choices when it comes to fish and seafood. To be recommended by Ocean Wise, a product must meet the following four criteria:
- Abundance and resilience: The species must be able to reproduce rapidly and withstand fishing activity.
- Good management: The species is managed through a comprehensive plan that takes into account ongoing scientific research.
- Limited bycatch: The species is caught using a method that limits bycatch of non-targeted or endangered species.
- The fishing methods minimize damage to marine or aquatic habitat and negative interactions with other species.
In summary, “sustainable” fishing must be respectful of the ecosystem (habitats and species), must meet today’s demand without compromising the demand of future generations and must allow species to reproduce faster than the depletion rate.
