Naturallyorganic product of the month: organic royal quinoa
Naturallyorganic, Avril Supermarché Santé’s home brand, offers exclusive products of superior quality. Avril’s founders carefully select each item during their numerous trips abroad, where they set out to discover local, responsible and eco-friendly producers. This month’s selection: organic royal quinoa.
Unlike rice and wheat, quinoa is not a part of the grass family. It is rather a pseudocereal, botanically recognized as the fruit of a plant of the same family as spinach and beet1. The white, red and tricolor royal quinoa grains of our naturallyorganic brand are grown on the Andean plateaus at 4,000 meters altitude in the Altiplano region of Bolivia. In addition to being certified organic by Ecocert Canada, they are GMO and gluten free.
Its many benefits
Quinoa is a food that stands out for its nutritional value. It ranks among the world’s top source of iron. Also, it has a high content of vitamin B complex (except vitamin B12), vitamin E, dietary fibre, high quality protein, omega-3 and omega-6 polyunsaturated fatty acids and minerals (calcium, potassium, magnesium, phosphorus) 2. Finally, quinoa is an interesting option for people with irritable bowel syndrome or celiac disease since it is gluten free1.
How to cook it?
Very versatile, quinoa can replace any grain in most recipes2. From breakfast (granola, yogurt parfaits, oatmeal, etc.) to lunch and dinner (salads, bowls, croquettes, etc.) and snacks (bars, energy balls, muffins, etc.), there are thousands of ways to serve it. Before cooking quinoa, it is important to rinse it thoroughly with water to remove any remaining traces of saponin, an antinutritional substance that covers the grains2. To cook quinoa, use one volume of quinoa per two volumes of water. Bring to a boil, cover and let simmer until the water is completely absorbed, about fifteen minutes. It’s that easy!
