Stocking up on electrolytes during exercise
Learn more about the key role of electrolytes and the Ener-C Sport’s Electrolyte Drink Mix, a must-have supplement to add to your water before or after workouts.
Why consume electrolytes?
After oxygen, water is the most important element for life because it is essential for all vital processes. Depending on the morphology, the body is made up of 60 to 70% of water and eliminates more than two liters of it per day on average (one liter through urine and another through sweat, stools and breathing). Although the water requirements vary for each person, they are much greater in hot weather. As a general rule, it is recommended to drink two to three liters of water daily and to consume an additional liter for each hour of exercise. It is also advisable not to rely on the thirst signal to hydrate; you should drink regularly throughout the day1.
A simple and effective way to ensure optimal hydration is to add electrolytes to your water. Electrolytes are mineral salts – sodium, potassium, magnesium, calcium, etc. – which circulate in the blood. Each has a specific role. For example, sodium retains water in the body and potassium acts in balance with it. When there is an imbalance between the two (if the body sweats due to heat or physical exertion), there can be a hydroelectrolytic imbalance and therefore dehydration2. Therefore, adding electrolytes to your water is particularly recommended during hot weather or during periods of sustained physical activity.
